Structural and Impact Performance of Thin-Walled Folded Sandwich Structures for Modular Resilient Infrastructure
This project aims to develop a new type of modular structural form termed folded sandwich structures. This form consists of a folded, thin-walled, origami-like core attached to two face skins. It can be used for plate (flat) or shell (curved) building components. Such structures are highly novel and there are many research questions related to their strength, stiffness, vibration, and failure behaviours. The present project will be primarily concerned with investigating performance of folded sandwich structures to understand their static thin-walled buckling failures and dynamic impact failures. Such research could lead to numerous potential applications, particularly towards modular resilient infrastructure for disaster-affected communities or military deployment.
